R. Gatotkaca adalah putra R. Bima, yang mempunyai kesaktian melayang di udara, yang gugur dalam perang Bartayuda oleh senjata Kunta-nya R. Karno.
Candi ini sebenarnya termasuk dalam satu kompleks candi lainnya yang sudah hancur.

Candi Gatotkaca is a Hindu temple in Dieng Plateau, in the district of Banjarnegara, Central Java Province. This temple is located on the west side of Arjuna temples complex, along the road to the Temple Bhima, across from the Museum Dieng Kailasa. Long time ago, Candi Gatotkaca is part of a complex of six temples, named Candi Setyaki, Candi Petruk, Candi Antareja, Candi Nakula, Candi Sadewa, and Candi Gatotkaca. But now the only remaining temple is Candi Gatotkaca only. Gatotkaca name given by residents to take the name of puppet characters from the Mahabharata story.
According to archaeologists, the temples in Dieng was built in the 8th century AD by Empress Sima who ruled the kingdom of Kalinga.
Candi Gatotkaca have rectilinear shape with a door located on the west side. In the other three sides of the wall there are niches decorated with kala-makara.
