Around 5,000 Polish men, women and children had made Valivade, now known as Gandhinagar, in Kolhapur their home during WW-II. Valivade was the largest refugee camp for Polish immigrants in India. The camp was built in 1942-43; the refugees left once peace returned to their country in 1948. Another camp was set up at Jamnagar in Gujarat. This March, citizens from Poland, the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Middle Eastern nations visited Valivade and the cemetery. They were either born at Valivade, or were between 4 and 10 years of age when they left the camp.
Now there are about 12,00 Firms engaged in wholesale trading.
