  • I'm guessing that they die from the fan blades, but wouldn't it suck to be that one bird who dies from electrocution because they flew into the electromagnet coils?
  • "sometimes"? Here are the facts: during the 12 years (i.e. 1985-1997) when our 40KW Enertech windmill was running, the grand total bird injuries was ZERO. During the first 5 years (i.e. Dec 2001 - Dec 2006) with our commercial-scale (660KW) Vestas, the grand total bird injuries: ZERO. During the 294 days for our larger 1800KW windmill, grand total bird injuries: ZERO. Not many "sometimes" there, right? One further point: as of October 2006, we succeeded in gettin Mass. Audubon to dispatch ornithologist observers, 26 visits/yr. to chart a baseline of bird species observed. Other than one (1) brown thrasher and two (2) bobolinks, they reported no species endangered or even threatened (these two species are under some 'habitat reduction' pressure, being field-nesting birds) -- the worrisome prospects appear to be: ZERO. yvt Malcolm Brown, Hull Municipal Light Plant (retired)
