Overtoun park was a gift to the town by the late RIGHT HON. BARON OVERTOUN, or JOHN CAMPBELL WHITE, to give him his ordinary name. White was also the owner of a large chemical works within the Burgh, and another gift he left the people of Rutherglen were hundreds of acres of contaminated land, which are now in the process of being made safe at great cost to the public purse. It will perhaps never be known the true extent of the damage done to the area of Rutherglen and it's people, by the infamous White's Chemical Company.
