Miera iela 58 was at one time Latvia's biggest tobacco factory. The first owner was Abraham Maikapar who started his company in 1887. When Abraham died in 1906 one of his sons, Theodor, a medical doctor who had served in the Imperial Russian navy, became the director of the company. He continued to practice as a doctor and in the 1920s and 30s was a recognised specialist in social hygiene.
In 1940 the company was nationalised and became the Riga Tobacco Factory. In 1992, Scandinavian Tobacco acquired the factory. All went well until 2009 when, owing to the vast amounts of cigarettes smugled into Latvia the factory, now known as the British American Tobacco, had to close.
