SS1 is also known as 'Kampung Tunku' and is one of the oldest parts of Petaling Jaya. It is a residential area in a quiet and leafy environment. The housing stock consists of 1558 units. One and two-storey bungalows make-up 998 of these units and there is also an apartment complex. SS1 is currently experiencing a transition in housing types from single-storey to two-storey housing. There is a small retail parade on Jalan Baiduri and a Post Office on JalanSS1/11, next to SRK Kampung Tunku.

Temples can be found in neighbouring SS9A (Chinese) and SS8 (Hindu) and mosques are located in SS3 and Section 51A. Schools are located in SS2 and SS3 and also within easy reach in Section 14 and SS9. Immediately north is scenic Taman Aman park, which includes Taman Paramount LRT station.

South of SS1 is SS9A where a market, wet market, cinema and police station are located. Adjacent to the southeast is Section 51A, a major business/industrial section of PJ.
