tower, panoramic view, place with historical importance
The Martinitoren (Martini Tower) is the best known tower of the city of Groningen. With its height of 97 metres it is the highest tower of this city.
On the place of the Martini Tower there have been two other towers before. However, these towers collapsed after thunderstrikes in the 13th and 15th century. The third tower (which is the one that is still standing there) was built between 1469 and 1548, when the weathercock was placed, but till 1554 the town built on the tower.
The citizens of Groningen call their tower d'Olle Grieze, meaning the old grey one in the local dialect.
