tower, panoramic view, place with historical importance

The Martinitoren (Martini Tower) is the best known tower of the city of Groningen. With its height of 97 metres it is the highest tower of this city.
On the place of the Martini Tower there have been two other towers before. However, these towers collapsed after thunderstrikes in the 13th and 15th century. The third tower (which is the one that is still standing there) was built between 1469 and 1548, when the weathercock was placed, but till 1554 the town built on the tower.
The citizens of Groningen call their tower d'Olle Grieze, meaning the old grey one in the local dialect.

Comments

  • The upper part of the tower differs in style, this is caused bij a fire that destructed the original upper part, the original height of the tower war about 120 meter (higher than the current highest church tower in the Netherlands, the Dom tower in Utrecht, height 110 meter). De fire was caused by burning material that was lit on purpose to celebrate the departure of Spanish and Wallonian troops in 1577.
  • In 1627 the tower got the form we know in the 21th century. The tower can be climbed for a part, and if you have a clear day, you have a nice view over the town and surroundings. Info at the Tourist Office, at 40 m. from the Tower.
