Site of a former steel furnace called Allenwood Steel. Abandonned (probably) in the 1980s as the steel industry changed. Tall and very alien looking, painted rusty red, this was the furnace the supplied steel to the rolling mill just west of here (now ISG steel). In the early 90s, myself and a friend broke in here several times for some urban explorations and photography. It was fascinating to walk around and climb through this amazing structure. Unfortunately, it was demolished in the early 90s and still sits as an empty lot.

  • My father headed the safety office of Allenwood Steel in Conshocken. I can still remember the smell of the coke ovens. I was lucky enough to attend a tour of the facility in 1973 with a group of scouts, since my father was the tour guide. My father lost his job there in 1977 when the company went bankrupt and closed its doors to production. According to my father the primary cause was the introduction of cheaper (and inferior) steel from Japan, which was actually subsidized by the Japanese government.
  • Your father was right
