-------------------------------------
In the mid 1990's, a group of musicians and artisans converted (illegally) the upper floors of a warehouse building that was located on this site into a loft, workspace, and party pad. The conversion was given the nod by the building's last private owner, who knew that the city soon planned to acquire the property one way or the other, and was glad to get some income out of it. The site of many parties and get togethers, with alcohol and drugs freely flowing, it was a definitely a place off the beaten path. It even attracted the attention of a a well known celebrity actor who dabbled in rock music, who made unscheduled appearances while in town thanks to the tenant's connections in the entertainment industry. At the time, the area was the perfect place to hold such events. Isolated and gritty, this was definitely not the area to wander around at 3AM. Once in the building, and there were multiple security doors to isolate the main area, you stayed in for personal safety- the sound of gun shots nearby was not uncommon, and the street's isolation attracted many shady characters. It is ironic that a police station now stands where many illicit activities once flourished. Even if the building had survived demolition, today's area residents probably would not tolerate the existence of 'The Loft.'
