Bengal Engineering & Science University, Shibpur is now became Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur from 4th March, 2014. The institute was established as Civil Engineering College, Calcutta, way back in 1856 with the idea of introducing engineering education in the country, has a long and checkered past. The University was known as Calcutta Civil Engineering College on and from 24th November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff. From 12th February, 1920 the name was changed to B.E. College Shibpur. The word Shibpur was deleted from 24th March, 1921. Till 1992, it was a constituent college of the Calcutta University. In recognition of its service to the nation(?) for all these years, the college was elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1992. His Excellency President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, formally inaugurated Bengal Engineering College (A Deemed University) on March 13, 1993. On 1st October, 2004, the deemed university was elevated to the status of a University with its present name.

  • EVERY ALUMNI IS PROUD OF THIS COLLEGE.IN INDIA,ENVIRONMENT FOR ENGINEERING STUDIES ONLY EXITS IN THIS COLLEGE FOUNDED IN1856. DOWNING HOSTEL WAS A CLASS OF ITS OWN.
  • বয়সতো অনেক হ্ল। বড়ো আর কবে হবে। আরো অনেক college, university & institute-এ কোনো অংশে কম teaching & research environment নেই এই ধারোনা পুরোপুরি ভ্রান্ত।
  • I stayed in DOWNING HALL in 1965 during my Ist year B.E.The hostel was believed to be haunted those days. I wonder whether the ghosts still reside in the small room on top of the building reached by a winding staircase from the common hall!   • The Academic Institutions including this one, should be free from any external political influences. For the students, study and knowledge should have the topmost priority. Although they should be concerned about various social and political issues, their involvement should not upto such an extent that may hamper their studies. তোরা ভাল করে পড়াশোনা করবি, নাকি দাদা-দিদিদের হয়ে কাজ করে নিজের জীবন নষ্ট করবি. তোরা ঠিকমতো যোগ্য হলে, তবেই দেশের উপকার হবে. দাদা-দিদিদের পাইয়ে দেওয়ার রাজনীতিতে সত্যিকারের ভাল হবে কি না ভেবে দেখ.

  • It was one of the best Engineering College in Asia in 1960's.Till 1974,I feel it held the same status.In fact I passed out in 1973.Unfortunately we had to loose couple of months due to some political troubles but what we have learned,like freindship development,engineering off cource,games,cosuming foods of all grades(Kakarmani rice to Chamarmani Rice)tiny pcs of mutton to slim fish pcs(machine cut)etc etc,handling & facing any ODD situations,is something I can't forget.When I tell these events,our children mostly studying in non-hostel system say it's all BULLSHIT!!!!.They can't imagine the pleasure of seeing the Ganges flowing just adjacent to the College boundary wall,Botanical Gardens,Sweets of Jathamasai Sweet shop....May be the modern culture having several gadgets for studies,communications,entertainment,freedom(100%),makes them think the old is a scrap!!!!!!
  • On 18th March,2012,we had a 1973 batch meet at Outram Club.I can't express what we felt seeing eace other!!!It was just like what we used to do everyday in our college days except about studies.There was Music,Food,Drinks,All Husbands+Wifes mostly looking OLD,but no change in attitude!!!!Most of the next generation are in working phase & entered in the family structure group.But WE FELT FOR THOSE WHO ARE NO MORE IN THIS WORLD!!!!There was no difference in attitude inspite of the freinds holding a high standard,status.huge work experience,(Working & Retired),even the toppers did'nt have any hesitation to mix with all the freinds!!!whether he/she was a high/low FUNDA!!!!!Remember we all passed out in 1973 with 1st Class.I was from Mechanical.We are still rearching all those who could not attend the meet.I wish & pray to the ALMIGHTY to keep them in good health and peace in the family.
