During the Revolutionary war, dozens of American soldiers under the command of General Anthony Wayne were killed as they slept at this site. The British soldiers were told not to fire a single shot but rather to sneak into the camp and slaughter as many soldiers as possible using only their bayonnettes. To get back at the British Anthony Wayne tracked down the troop and had his men retaliate the same way several days later. This is why he is referred to as "Mad Anthony Wayne". It is rumored that his ghost walks the battlefield as well as the mass grave that sits to the west.
