  • barangay iraya is my birthplace. in the late fifties, it has narrow dirt roads, with road-corner running water, from ilauod, with scanty electrical power by chokee, its a six-hour dusty bumpy ride to iloilo city costing 60 centavos for the fare, night-open-air movies provided by cosmetic and detergents companies happenning once or twice a year, soft drinks cost 10 centavos, beer 15 cents, rice cost about 8 centavos per kilo or 25 cents per ganta. peso is two to one dollar until 1965, iraya is the prime barangay, housing two high schools and the municipal building. bayanihan, (ligaw) is still popular. harana is a wholesome custom. close family ties is very strong, traveling abroad is a taboo, bicycle is a luxury property, female rider is considered lewd, and horses still a mode of transportation. at that early stage of the socio-economis-political and religious developmentof bugasong, intellectuals from iraya abounds helping the the build-up of bugasong for a promising future, may be to what bugasong is, today. iray means a place upstream, generally understood as having fresher water, food, air, envoironment and even social ambiance. iraya or bugasong, despite it economic shortcoming are still a nice place to live in and go home to. it s a nice place to remember for homesickness.
