The Lobster House Restaurant commanded a wonderful view of the Jacksonville skyline. Originally built as a boat repair shop, it was converted to The Lobster House in 1944. Several scenes from the movie The Creature of the Black Lagoon were filmed here. This popular dining spot was destroyed by fire in 1962. Later, the Diamondhead Restaurant (now the River City Brewing Co.) was built adjacent to the site where the old Lobster House once stood. Friendship Park, the fountain and the Museum of Science and History were also built on the vacant land shown in the photo beyond the Lobster House.

  • Thanks for the background info re the restaurant. And those by commentors who said it was the 2nd movie/1955, not the 1st movie/1954 (the 3rd Gill-Man movie in the series was 1956). Wiki says it was a "seaside restaurant" where Gill-Man kidnaps Helen (Lori Nelson) while she & the other guy were at a party at the restaurant. But if it was the Lobster House on the St Johns River (near old Acosta Bridge), then it was a "riverside restaurant," & not "seaside." Does anyone remember if the river rolled up to the shore by the Lobster House in those days? I ask because our family went down there & stood along the river (at night) & watched as they filmed the Gill-Man coming up & out of the river. I'm trying to confirm if my memory is correct: I thought he "walked up" to the shore after emerging from "the deep." But if there was a "seawall" at the river, he would have had to CLIMB up over it. Maybe there were no "seawalls" yet in that area circa May 1955 (movie general release date) & previously during the filming(?) Any old-timer local historians who remember? :) TY!
  • The Lobster House signage is plainly visible in "Revenge of the Creature". Whoever wrote the wiki is mistaken.
