Huge new development on the site of a demolished series of buildings of the same name
www.goodmansfields.com/
The old Goodmans Fields was a large, low red-brick complex built in the late 1970s as a computer centre, interbank cheque clearing centre and IT development centre for National Westminster Bank. The name relates to a nearby area dating back to Elizabethan times. In the mid 1980s an extension was built on the west of the site, replacing a small parade of shops/offices at the southeast corner of the junction of Alie Street and Leman Street. In the early 1990s the mainframe computers were removed. In 2000 NatWest was taken over by Royal Bank of Scotland. The "Goodmans Campus" includes the Eastgate House and 75 Leman Street buildings on Leman Street. In 2006, development started on part of the site to create Berkeley Homes' City Quarter. Remaining RBS operations are likely to move to nearby buildings during 2007.

  • As someone who worked in Goodmans Fields for 21 years, i can point out a few mistakes. The Phase 2 extension took place during the early 1990's. Mainframes where still in Goodmans until the mid to late 1990's and the bridge was there until after RBS intergration. There was a shop on the corner until the mid 80's but that was all there was on the site that wasn't NatWest. The complex boasted its own pub 'The Long Bar' which was there until the early 90's when catering was out sourced. It original remit title was 'Management Services Division' which was clearly displayed on the front of the building in its early years.
  • I worked for National Westminster Bank in Leman Street probably around 1976-77. I remember going towards Aldgate East Station there used to be a little tobacconist run by a jewish man who had a long beard, We used to go to Petticoat lane - Peter
  • I worked for Higgs and Hill in the construction of the computer centre for Nat Wesr from January 1976 until October 1976 . The topping - out took place around May 1977. This was the biggest contract ( 40 million pounds ) in London at that time. Aidan O ' Sullivan.
  • I worked at Goodmans Fields from Easter 1977, while it was still under construction, until taking a management position with Nat West Group Proprty in 1991. I remained with NatWest until 1999. I was employed as part of a large in house contingent of buildings services technicians and maintained the estate and the specialist plant that was required to support the data centre. A NatWest subsidiary, Centre File, and a cash bullion centre were located at EastGate House. I regularly visited EastGate House on maintenance duties in my role as an electrical shift technician .
