castle, listed building / architectural heritage
The "Red Palace" was originally erected in 1576 as a widow´s palace for the duchess Dorothea Susanna. The building with baroque gables and a wonderful portal showing coat of arms belongs to the town´s most representative buidings. Formerly, it was connected with the "Green Palace" and the Castle. In the 18th century, the "Free Drawing School", founded by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Justin Bertuch, was accommodated here. Later it was used as a ministerial building. www.wimare.de/popup_picture.php?lang=en&city=w&page=5
