Hubertusburg was built in 1721-1724 by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, as a hunting villa. Here was signed the Treaty of Hubertusburg (1763), which together with the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years' War.

After serving as a royal residence, Hubertusburg housed such institutions as a lunatic asylum and a nursing school.
