Old High Court building, now a small portion with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) (Nagpur)

At present the building is in a dilapidated state and has been declared unsafe for occupation. old HC building area spread on about 18,200 square metres is declared as monumental structure and can’t be demolished.
ASI is using a small portion of the building. The artifacts, antiquities and various other precious materials dug out by the ASI during various excavations which could be used for educational purposes are lying here since years. These can be put on display in a museum that was planned earlier.
* Old High Court building at Nagpur, then capital of the Central Provinces and Berar, was built in 1891-93 to house the judicial commissioner's office
* In 1936, when the judicial commissioner's office came to an end the government decided to house the High Court in Nagpur in this building. When high court moved to new building in 1940 this came to be known as Old High Court Building
* Architecturally, the building represents Anglo-Indian or Colonial character along with some local character
* It is a double storeyed structure built of bricks, stones, teak and Burmese wood and has porticoes on three sides. The thick big wall has arcade veranda, arched wooden doors and Doric columns with little ornamentation





The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has created a new circle with Nagpur as its headquarters. The 25th circle of the ASI has been made after bifurcating the Aurangabad circle for better preservation and maintenance of the centrally protected monuments, archeological sites and remains located in Vidarbha.
