It was built originally in 1915 as RNAS Longside which was a base for Airships. It was officially opened as RAF Peterhead in 1941 it was closed in 1945 and auctioned off in 1959. Part of the base is used for private planes and part is owned by CHC Scotia as a support base for the Helicopters used to ferry oil workers offshore.

I feel that I have to correct the above statement. RNAS Longside was indeed built in 1915 as an airship base but it was a different base from RAF Peterhead. The airship base was situated about 2 miles south of Longside and in 1918 at the joining of the RNAS and the RFC to become the RAF the base became (naturally) RAF Longside. RAF Peterhead was not built until 1941. I might add that the airship base is in an area called Lenabo and the airships were affectionately known as "the Lenabo soos" because of their similarity to sows! There are still some very interesting things to see there in between the trees and weeds!
