For Xanten, it all started in Birten. On the slope of the Fürstenberg the Romans erected their first military camp Vetera Castra, the remains of which are hidden under farmland today. The second Roman camp, built on the banks of the Rhine, can likewise no longer be seen.

The earthwork amphitheatre has survived, however.
