The ancient and early medieval city of Tusculum was an important town on the northern fringe of the Alban Hills. It was home to the influential lineage of the counts of Tusculum, who dominated the papacy for a period in the 8th-11th centuries. The city was destroyed by the people of Rome in 1191. A few archaeological remains, including the amphitheater, theater, and the foundations of a church can still be seen.
