Agartala, capital of Tripura, a NorthEastern State of India. Agartala is a component of two words viz. Agar, a kind of oily valuable perfume tree + suffix -tala, a store house. Agar @ Agaru tree was plenty in this region i.e., entire North-East. Agaru @ Agar was referred in the context of Graet King Raghu who tied up his Elephant fleet with the Agaru @ Agar trees on the bank of Lauhitya.

Agartala was ruled by the Tipra kings. One of their earliest King was Patardan B.C. 1900. The other imporatant kings were Chitrarath, Drikpati, Dharmapha, Loknath, Sridharan, Jivadharan etc. It was under the Jaytunga Janapada and Subhanga Visaya.

Again, the name 'Tripura' is related to word 'Tipra' means water borne children, some suggest that it is from 'Lord Tripureswara @ Tripurari or Goddess Tripureswari'. Tripura is riched with Chamanu, Bagapha, Dumburnagar of early people. The river equivalent of Tipra word -Dui, Hill equivalent is -Mura etc.
  • The word "twui" is water, "pra" is vicininity in KAKBORAK language( Local language of Tripura Local Tribe, specifically OF Debbarma tribe who ruled tripura kingdom). Tripura was originally called twuipra, meaning vicinity to water. Tripura kingdom was extended upto Bay of Bengal (presently chittagong of Bangladesh)I.e very near to water.Therefore the name Twuipra, presently TRIPURA.

  • Forests cover 57 percent of the land in Tripura and are also the basis for the livelihood of many poor people. People living in penury uses fuel wood, thatch, fodder, timber and bamboo from the forest for their subsistence. The state has four Wildlife Sanctuary –Sepahijala, Gumti, Trishna and Roa covering almost 600 sq.km. The census 2001 figures that the 51 percent of the working force is engaged in agricultural activities. The net area under agriculture is 2800 sq km. Among this more than 75 percent of the land is used for more than one crop a year. The total gross cropped area in 2003-04 was 4930 sq km. which gives a cropping intensity of 176 percent. The major crops are no doubt cereals of which rice has the prime position followed by potato and pulses.

  • It may be true.... but there is another reason for the name of this state "TRIPURA", In Rajmala (the history of kingdom of tripura) there was a King Named Tripur, and by his name the name was formed as Tripura.
