Lancaster is an ancient city and county town (though the council are now based in Preston) which actually didn't get city stautus until the 1930s.

Founded supposedly by the Romans it has memorable and quite unique skyline, with the ancient priory church and castle on one hill and the bizzare Ashton Memorial on the other. Despite being burned down by Scots on a such regular basis up to the Seventeenth Century that it almost seems to have been a sport, it is still full of historical interest. Some brilliant Georgian buildings - now looking better than ever - show how (once the '45 was out of the way) the town boomed as one of the busiest and most profitable ports in the country, as well as a significant mill town.

Both have now gone - thanks to the silting up of the Lune and the end of the cotton mill industry, but Lancaster is still a busy historic town and well worth a visit.
