Since 2006, the official term has been "Gulf of Porto: Calanche of Piana, Gulf of Girolata, Scandola Reservation". This nature reserve, part of a larger regional park on Corsica, is an ideal nesting and breeding area for many species of waterfowl such as seagulls, cormorants and the now rare white-tailed eagle. Large sections of the
rocky La Girolata peninsula are covered with natural woodland where it is still possible to see vast expanses of macchia pine, which is typical of the Mediterranean. Dense eucalyptus groves also fringe the sandy beaches. The coves and grottoes on the rugged rocky coastline possess a variety of underwater fauna and flora, including some rare algae species. The area has been wonderfully preserved.
