Mount Walter at 13,141 feet/4,005 m is the second highest named summit in New Mexico, but is not usually considered an independent peak, as it has only about 80 feet (25 m) of topographic prominence. It is sometimes mistaken for Wheeler Peak, since it is along the hiking route to Wheeler. Both peaks lie in the Taos Mountains, a subrange of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which is in turn a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. (credit Wikipedia)

Comments

  • This is not the location of Wheeler Peak. It is farther south on this ridge.
  • This peak is Mt Walter. Wheeler peak is near the midpoint of the ridge leading southerly, and the intersection of three ridges to the south is Simpson Pk. All of these peaks are near 13000 feet in elevation.
  • Thanks William and Scott. Hope these edits and an added place for the real Wheeler Peak address your remarks.
