Gargi College was named after an enlightened woman, Gargi, who figures in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad of the Vedic Age. She emerges as an intelligent and bold person embodying the spirit of enquiry juxtaposed to faith as is shown by her most penetrating and challenging questions before the great sage Yajnavalkya. In the Upanishad, Gargi seems to represent the intellectual potentiality of the race of Homo sapiens, which continues to manifest itself, in the quest of ever-widening fields of knowledge.
This college was founded in 1967 by the Delhi Administration and is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. A lot is on offer academically on the strength of its being a three-in-one college, catering to arts, science, and commerce. It has a little over 1,800 students, 170 faculty members and 140 non-academic staff in all.
Gargi College provides a wide variety of courses. In addition to regular courses offered at the other colleges of the Delhi University, the college also provides two new courses: Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a 3-year degree course in Industrial Microbiology.
Gargi is also a rich source of intellectual stimuli as it provides courses designed to broaden and develop students' interests in music, dance, theatre, films and art. The college offers an environment education programme called Greening Gargi to make environmental studies a part of its curriculum, both as an academic exercise and an extra-curricular activity.
Gargi's NSO, Extension Service, and NCC programmes are intended to channelise the students' youthful energy and vigour. College education is a transforming experience and the endeavour is to help the students fulfil their potential. Gargi helps the students to discover themselves and grow into wholesome human beings, for the college goal is: Every student passing through the portals of the college emerges as a fully developed individual symbolising the spirit of enterprise and enquiry that characterises Gargi.
