Chernyakhovsk (Russian: Черняхо́вск, formerly until 1946 known as Insterburg; Russian: И́нстербург; Lithuanian: Įsrutis; Polish: Wystruć; Old Prussian : Instrāpils[8]) is a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, and the administrative center of Chernyakhovsky District. Located at the confluence of the Instruch and Angrapa rivers, which unite to become the Pregolya river below Chernyakhovsk, the town had a population in 2017 of 36,423.
History of this settlement starts from Nadruvian (Old-Prussian) settlement and castle, which was destroyed by Teutonic knights in 1336. They built an Insterburg castle and a new settlement, with received city rights in 1583. During the 19th-20th century Insterburg was known as a cultural, industrial and military center of Eastern Prussia. The city was severely damaged during both World Wars. Since 1946 it is called Chernyakhovsk to commemorate General Ivan Chernyakhovsky.
