Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple is an ancient temple said to be built around the 11-12th Century. Lord Shiva is the main deity of this temple. On the west side of this temple there is a unique pond with stone steps leading to the water. It is said that in the olden days pearls were found to be growing in the Pond. In the local dialect "Muttu” means pearls, which brought the name Mutthur to this place later called as Puttur.

During the month of April the Car Festival (Rathotsava) is celebrated for ten days with much gaiety and fervor. The town is at its colorful best with the dazzling lights and marvelous display of fire works. More than a lakh (100,000) people visit Puttur at the time of the festival.

Barekere Kedilaya family members are the hereditary Brahmin priests of this temple.

  • when my grandparents were in putturu, i was a regular visitor for the annual jathra between 1965 to 1975. all the 9 days i enjoyed the jathra. best part of it for me was yakshagana of both tenku & badagu which i never missed. highly scholarly presentation, depth knowledge of the artistes malpe ramadasa samaga, sheni, shambu hegde, balkuru k yaaji, mijar annappa, puttur narayana hegde, empe katte ramaiah rai, bolar narayana shetty, kolyur ramachandra rao etc etc i canno forget the different prasangas. another best part was bethala dancing in front of lord carried on the head of the preist. we were wondering who was the person inside. he was hitting us when we pulled the hand of bethala which made him lose balance. paintings on the walls were excellent. now in 2012 it has faded. nobody to take care of it. it has become a godown dumping all sundry items. Bhakthi beyond any measurable points is that of car valued rs 1 crore donated by mr.muthappa rai. it moves round only 1 day in a year. 364 days 1 crore remaining idle. in front of bhakthi money is nothing.
