Also known as the Hotel Grand Meigas and the Hotel Caleta Poseidon in recent years, Hotel Caleta (its original name) has seen a number of changes in decades past. Its an older waterfront facility boasting 200+ rooms which, in its heyday, played host to many rich-and-famous celebrities; but as the city expanded eastward with newer more-modern hotels, the Caleta - along with other facilities in Old Acapulco - gradually lost its luster.

Today, this hotel is still perched on a prime parcel of land at the east end of Playa Caleta - yet it mainly draws its clientele from the national tourist base, especially those seeking inexpensive accommodations. Its name seems to change frequently - often being referred to as the Hotel Caleta Beach Resort, or most recently as the Hotel Caleta Poseidon. There was also an attempt to 'timeshare' the property, though it appears that - for the most part - it's remains a hotel.

Based on current reviews of the Caleta - and word on the street - the sad truth is that the Hotel Caleta Poseidon is badly in need of renovation and repair. A host of information can be found online, but most hotel-booking sites misleadingly continue to promote the place as the grand lady she once was (and no longer is).

Though outdated, this webpage offers some additional insight (and photos) from the viewpoint of a man who's been traveling to Acapulco since the 1980s:

Interestingly, an August/2009 real estate webpage shows the property as being listed for sale ... at a price of US$2.8Million:

Comments

  • Hotel is for all appearances closed - whether awaiting remodel, or just to be left to fall into disrepair, who knows.
  • Still closed, no signs of any development, not currently advertised for sale.
