This is an experimental educational institution of the Russian Open Society since 1963. It was begun in 1959 as an experiment at the elementary school level researching the possibilities of educating younger schoolboys in the conditions of the special organization of educational activity.

Since 1991 the faculty has worked at retraining teachers in Russia in the methods developed by the school's founders, D. B. Elkonin and V. V. Davidov. In 1996 the methods of Elkonin and Davidov became one of the three state systems of elementary school education.

In 1999 the laboratory school started to develop high school programs and that process continues.
