rock formations, interesting place

At 55-ft-high, 35-ft-wide with an overhanging ledge that gave it it's name, Shelter Rock is both the largest, weighing about five million pounds, and best known of Long Island's glacial erratics. It likely broke off cliffs in the Bronx/Westchester area and traveled southeast in an ice sheet about 20-million years ago to its resting place in a corner of the "Greentree" estate. Historians and geologists believe the natural shelter of the overhang made it a perfect place to camp and light a fire whose heat would radiate off the rock face. The Manhasset area was inhabited by the native Matinecock Indian tribe, who are believed to have camped there, as artifacts have been found in the area.
