Craney Island today refers to a man made landmass formed from dredge material from the various channels leading to and from the Atlantic Ocean. It was built by the Corp of Engineers and has been used as a weapons depot and testing range.

During the War of 1812, the site of the Craney Island US Naval Supply Center, which at the time was an island, was the site of fortifications built by the Virginia militia to protect Norfolk from British attack. In June 1813 British amphibious forces attempting to land here were repulsed by the Americans. The British defeat prevented an invasion of Norfolk and saved the frigate USS Constellation from destruction.
