A well-known Portland Institution, Old Wive's Tales is a non-aggressively vegetarian (you can get flesh if you must) restaurant, famous for its Hungarian mushroom soup. Its staff tends to look a bit ex-hippie eccentric, but provides generally excellent, personable service. It tends to be thought of as a gay hangout, for historical reasons, but is, in fact, a good place to take kids, or to have special events. It has a big glassed off meeting room and a playroom. Kind of high tone, with serious art on the wall, but the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed.

  • The salad bar is decent, and reasonably priced.
