A ghost town of the southern Mother Load region, Merced Falls survived the end of the Gold Rush for a time, as the site of a glass factory. It was frequently visited by tourists until the early 70s, for the simple joy of crossing the Merced River over the longest remaining usable wooden covered bridge in California, until a county road department built the new bridge.

  • I like the unedited version of this description better!
  • I too prefer the unedited version, which read: . . . the longest remaining usable wooden covered bridge in California, until a county road department with absolutely no sense of tourism, history, or culture sabotaged it and built the new bridge.
