Founded in the year 909, the Abbey of Cluny took its place among the grandest and most influential monastic institutions in Europe, especially from the second half of the 10th century through the early 12th. The abbey was the site of the largest church in Christendom before St. Peter's in Rome was built. During the French Revolution, the abbey was sacked and mostly destroyed; only a small part of the original remains.
