The statue depicts "Martin of Tours", born approx. 316/317 in Sabaria, nowadays Hungary, passed away on November 7th 397 close to Tours / France. Martin became famous by sharing his cloak with a beggar.
Originally a Martin statue was placed on the roof of the Dome of Mainz. This statue was replaced in 1928 by a copy. Another copy was placed later here, on the terrace of the "Kästrich".
