Byakud Village, Taluk : Raybag, Dist Belgaum, State - Karnataka

It is said that during the Quit India movement, this village sheltered freedom fighters from Maharashtra and Karnataka particulary Subhash Bose's INA.

This is a village of V L Patil who was MP as Independant candidate in the first Parliment when Nehru was elected Prime-minister. He later served in Karnataka state politics for more than 40 years and held some key ministries. He is currently retired from politics and lives near by in a different City. His son Pratap Rao Patil lives in this village and is the head of the village.

This village is inhabited by mostly farmers and cultivate lands, although few young ones have left the village for greener pastures. Most land is not irrigated and depend on good monsoon. There are few small lakes around this village but their source is mainly rain water.

Among many people who live here, there is a family called the Nilajagi who were known to be very loyal to the head of the village (Patil family - who administered many surrounding villages for Kolhapur Maharaj in pre-independant India). Some members of the Nilajagi clan to this day work for them. Notable Nilajagi family elders include Lasmanna Nilajagi, Ningappa son of Lasmanna. These two elders mainly sacrificed their lives working for Patil family. The Photo shown here is of Ningappa Lasmanna Nilajagi who still lives here with his sons and many grandsons.
