RAF Scampton Guard Room

Nigger is Buried out side the office window of the Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, DSO,DFC "Nigger", a black Labrador dog, laid in this Guard Room on one of the cell beds after he was hit by a car on the A15 outside the gate on 15/05/43. "Nigger", had been on many training flights with the 617 Squadron and was a mascot for them. To prevent a negative reaction on morale and focus towards the mission, "Operation Chastise", (the destruction of the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe Dams on 15-16/05/43), orders were left that he should be buried at 24:00 hours, the time that the sortee would be over the dams in Germany.
The rest of the squadron was not informed that their mascot had been killed until they returned.
