Original site of Chengwatana. Originally an Ojibwa village called Zhingwaadena, it was a popular site with trappers and traders. The village continued to grow and was platted in 1856. The village was named as the original County Seat on March 1, 1856, and renamed Alhambra, and was again renamed to Chengwatana in 1857. The village was used as a military post in 1862-1863.

Chengwatana remained the county seat until shortly after the railroad was run on western shore of Cross Lake. Pine City was platted along the new railroad, and soon the population and County Seat migrated to Pine City. A series of wildfires burned much of what was left, and Chengwatana eventually disappeared.
