Louhu/Chinese-style Water Clock (Beijing)

China / Beijing / Peking / Beijing
 ruins, interesting place

12 bronze characters were meant to spurt water on the particular hour of the day they represent in the Chinese calendar, and all together at midday. Chinese calendar is broken into two-hour periods. Example horse covers 11am to 1pm. Out-of-doors stairways were on each side and at the top were 2 dolphins and 2 lions spouting water that fell into basins and ran down a wave-decorated conduit into a large shell at the base, and from thence into a pool. On the different tiers of the balustrades, 54 tiny fountains sent up a barrage of sparkling spray that formed cascades. Designed by Father Michel Benoit of the Jesuit order for Emperor Qianlong c. 1781. www.360cities.net/image/old-summer-palace-haiyan-hall
