Ferndale, California

USA / California / Ferndale /

Ferndale is a city in Humboldt County, California. It had a population of 1,371 at the 2010 census.
Promoted as Victorian Ferndale, the town was largely destroyed during the 1992 earthquake named after the town, and was rebuilt with strong emphasis on preserving and restoring the town's Victorian-era history. Ferndale suffered similarly during the 1906 earthquake, with damage from the quake here much worse than in San Francisco, (where most of the destruction was caused by the fire).

The Humboldt County Fairgrounds are marked by the oval-shaped racetrack and several buildings with metal roofs in the north end of the town.

  • The movie "Outbreak" (1995) was filmed here and the fictional town of Cedar Creek, though presented as more than twice as big, was described as being situated here, although the hospital shown is actually in Pasadena, CA. There's a really nice scene of the military moving in at dawn over the bridge at Fernbridge.
