Originally named Isle aux Dindes (Island of Turkeys) by the French.
By 1810, the island took its modern name because of the warlike Indian entrenchments that were visible at the northeastern end of the Island. What these entrenchments were for is long forgotten.
Formerly owned by BASF, Inc., this island is now part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. The island is administered by nearby La Salle, Ontario.
