Uninhabited island and nature preserve in the South Pacific ocean. part of the Line Islands belonging to the Republic of Kiribati.
Originally exploited for Guano harvesting in the early 1900's, the island was used by the United Kingdon for atmospheric nuclear tests in 1957. Archaelogical ruins from ancient polynesian villages were first studied in the 1920's.
