cemetery, catholicism
Roman Catholic cemetery for Mackinac Island.
The parish cemetery was originally located downtown, but when it became too crowded, the cemetery was moved here.
An ornate stone gateway on one side of the cemetery has gone unused since it was built because it is too low for the island's horse-drawn hearse to fit under.
In order to prevent overcrowding, a person must have been born on the island or own property on Mackinac Island to be buried here.
