HISTORY
St. Mary's School was founded in 1987 by Drs. Michael A. Costello and Marilou Palabrica-Costello to answer the need for a high quality co-educational, non-sectarian school in Cagayan de Oro.
From the very start, St. Mary's School has adopted the Personalized Education Program (P.E.P), a pioneering educational innovation derived from the pedagogy of Saint Pedro Poveda, and introduced in the Philippines during the early seventies by Poveda Learning Centre in Quezon City. This approach was later adopted by other private schools in the country. St. Mary's was the first and, to date, the only school in the Mindanao region, that practices this program. During the first years of its foundation, administrators and several teachers of St. Mary's School underwent training in P.E.P. at Poveda Learning Centre. As a personalized teaching-learning approach, P.E.P. emphasizes teacher-student personal interaction as well as the balance of individual and cooperative learning among the students. Hence, the number of students is usually limited to 35 students. The P.E.P. is particularly considered one of the distinctive features of St. Mary's academic program.

CAMPUS
The original location for St. Mary's School was a rented bungalow at Vamenta Compound in Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro. In 1988, the school moved to its present campus in Sitio Mandumol, Barangay Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City. The more spacious new campus sits on a hilltop that commands a breathtaking view of the Cagayan de Oro River valley and the opposite wooded hills beyond. The clean and pleasant surroundings accented by lush green lawns, flowering plants and shady trees are conducive to a wholesome atmosphere of well-being, serenity, harmony and relaxed spirit. This atmosphere enhances the joy of learning and the creation of a family-like interaction within the whole educational community and with the families of the students.

VISION
A value-energized learning community wherein educators and students responsibly participate in the teaching-learning processes, aimed at fostering the holistic growth of persons towards becoming spiritually and morally-grounded life-long learners who are self-motivated, self-disciplined and self-oriented and steeped with a sense of commitment to the ongoing challenges of personal wholeness and social transformation.

MISSION
St. Mary's School, a non-sectarian institution for Pre-school, Elementary and High School boys and girls gives shape to the original vision of its founders by dedicating itself to the mission of promoting the integral growth and development of its students, grounded on faith in God, in ethical responsibility and in commitment of service to persons and country, deriving its educational philosophy and style from the educational principles and practice of an innovative educator and Christian humanist, St. Pedro Poveda.

SCHOOL LOGO
The School's logo, derived from an ancient Chinese symbol representing the principles of the Yin and Yang, communicates the stress on the holistic thrust of the school's educational endeavor. It embodies its dream of laying the foundation for student's growth towards becoming well-rounded, integrated and empowered persons, imbued with moral principles and responsiveness to the on-going challenges of personal growth and social transformation. The blue in the logo is a reminder of the Patroness of the School, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Model of teacher, and of a fully-integrated, life-generating person. The gold color signifies wisdom that comes from deep faith, authentic knowledge, spiritual insights and self-transcending, loving service to others. Thus, it is also the symbol of Mary, Seat of Wisdom and inspiration of the teaching-learning community.

SCHOOL MOTTO
The school's motto underscores its principal tasks and on-going challenges: "DISCERE, CRESCERE, SERVIRE," that is "TO LEARN, TO GROW, TO SERVE."

It's great that the school accepts Special Children, but when your child is normal, he/she can become victim of wild Special Kids that could hurt him/her. Teachers in first grade are too lenient - do not know how to discipline the students - they run and scream allover the place. One kid had a toy gun loaded with pellets. This was before class though, but this kind of toy should not be allowed from the main gate of the school. One of my daughter's classmates was a special child, too wild she could hurt other kids. Then when they release the kids earlier than the time they had you informed (through letter, etc.) and the kid's parent is not yet there, the teacher will not care. Your kid is left out of the classroom, and the teacher saves herself for the day. Your kid will be left wandering allover the place in the school. You are lucky if they are not able to get out. Also heard that teachers have more time for private tutorial sessions than teaching your kids. Why? Because they make more money out of it. Great school? Highly disagree! High tuition fee though.
