Asansol is all set to get its first indoor stadium. Naryan Swaroop Nigam, the chief executive officer of Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) confirmed that the project would begin by October this year.

The stadium would be able to accommodate 500 spectators and will be built at a cost of capacity indoor stadium will be about Rs 1.30 crores and will come up at the Polo Grounds.

The fund for this stadium will be provided from MP Local Area Development Fund (MPLAD). ADDA and Eastern Coalfields Limited will also pitch in with money. The stadium will have two badminton courts and an interchangeable volleyball court. The uniqueness of this indoor stadium is that it will have the largest shell concrete roof in the district.

“There was an urgent need of an an indoor stadium in Asansol and we hope to host some state level sporting events here,” said Nigam. The Asansol Stadium will also be renovated with a small part of the fund.

At present, all the stadiums of Asansol, except for Asansol stadium, are maintained by the central public sector undertakings.

The IISCO Steel Plant has also planned to set up a 30,000 capacity stadium and a sports academy at Burnpur in association with SAIL. It will cost about Rs 35 crores.
