Starting as the Daily Record in 1956, it was merged into the the old Middletown Times-Heraldin 1960 - essentially replacing the T-H. The Record was a revolutionary paper- it was one of the first in the country to use so-called 'cold offset' type, type that was set from a photographed composed page, NOT from hot steel and engraved pictures. This saved massive amounts of labor and resources, and it made for a cleanerlook to the paper also. It also allowed for a cheaper way to insert photos and other graphics as well. The early Record was a sensation in the newspaper business, and many newspaper industry people made trips to Middletown. The paper bled money until the merger with the Times-Herald, and the growth of the area in the 1960's. Another mildly historic fact of the paper's history is that The Record was one of the early journalistic homes of the notorious Dr. Hunter S Thompson. Thompson's tenure at the paper did notlast very long, however. Bored with the grind of covering fire compay meetings and such, he was fired/and or quit after supposedly kicking a soda machine, and refusing to pay the damages.
