Dongying, a prefecture-level city, lies on the northern (Bohai Sea) coast of Shandong province, at the seashore of Bohai, with Beijing, Tianjin and Tanggu to the north and Shandong Peninsula to the south. It is not only the joint area of Bohai rim and the Yellow River economic zone, but also important passage between northeast China and the central plain. Dongying is a prefecture-level city founded in October in 1983. It is a central city on the Yellow River delta, where lies the second largest oil field, Shengli oil field and the University of Petroleum. There are three counties, Kenli, Guangrao and Lijin, and two districts, Dongying and Hekou,under the jurisdiction of Dongying city with an area of 8,053 kilometers and a population of about 1.8 million.
