Midway between Portland, Maine and Montreal, Quebec, the line was intended as a link in a worldwide network of rail and steamship transportation, but the death of the company's leader, Charles M. Hayes (aboard the Titanic), competition and the changing economic relationship between Canada and the US left this village out in the cold.*

The effect of the railroad's boom and bust in Island Pond is clearly evidenced in the number of grand old Victorian houses, some cared for, some decaying.
