This building complex ist the second big part of the university of Erlangen besides the Südgelände (southern complex). While the southern complex houses all the tecnical disciplins the Philosophische Fakultät is home of all the other disciplines like linguistics (like German, English, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Nordic and Oriental Languages etc.) and human/societal sciences (like Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, History and Archeology, Religion (protestant & catholic), media sciences).

The medical sciences are spread throughout the rest of the city center. In overexaggeration the students sometimes point out that can blindly throw a brick in any direction an will mit two hospitals, a doctor and a nurse in one go.

Other parts of the univaerity can be found in Nuremberg (training in teaching, economics and social services) and most recently in Fürth as well.
