THE ENGLISH PREPARATORY SCHOOL
The goal of the English Preparatory School is to prepare students for their undergraduate careers at Kadir Has University.
KHU ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AND PLACEMENT TEST
To demonstrate the English language competency, students must take a proficiency and placement test in English at the beginning of their first year. This exam determines whether a student is proficient enough in English to proceed with his or her undergraduate studies.
A student must score at least 70/100 to pass this exam. If the student scores below 70/100, he or she is placed in a group that is best suited to their needs. A student may also present valid TOEFL and IELTS scores instead of taking the institutional proficiency exam. KHU requires scores of at least 213 in the TOEFL and 6 in the IELTS.
Students who do not have the required level of language proficiency must take a year of English language and academic skills courses, designed to enhance students' ability to follow lectures in English, take notes, read course books, write papers, and express themselves clearly and fluently in English.
At the beginning of the year, students in the English Preparatory School are grouped according to their skill levels. The programs and hours of instruction are tailored to the needs of each group. In addition to classroom teaching, language training also utilizes the CALL lab, video rooms and Self-Access Room.
CALL
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), is a language laboratory stocked with a variety of CDs and other material designed to assist students in their studies. The program for CALL classes parallels the main curriculum and emphasizes the skills students will use in their classes.
